Akemi Johnson "Night in the American Village: Women in the Shadow of the U.S. Military Bases in Okinawa"

What is it like to live in the borderlands around a U.S. military base abroad? Akemi Johnson will read from and discuss her new book, Night in the American Village: Women in the Shadow of the U.S. Military Bases in Okinawa, which explores the complex physical and cultural spaces surrounding the many American bases on this southern Japanese island. She'll touch on the history since WWII and the many ways Okinawans interact with the U.S. military presence--including resistance, cultural exchange, and identity formation.
