Full Contact Teaching: Making the Most of Class Time
The 2014 Teaching & Learning Conference invites DePaul faculty and staff to consider the value and possibilities of “real-time” interaction in the classroom and online. This year’s theme, “Full Contact Teaching: Making the Most of Class Time,” calls us to imagine the range of interactive learning experiences that add value to person-to-person learning.
What discipline-specific models exist to flip the classroom, or deliver course content outside of class to allow more time for students to engage in the material through class activities?
How can we take full advantage of the immediacy that real-time or face-to-face teaching affords? How do we ensure our teaching remains focused on human connection and interaction?
How can we use technology to deliver just-in-time teaching, which adapts to students? varied and changing needs?
What are the challenges of teaching hybrid classes, which combine online learning and face-to-face interaction?
As with past conferences, the 2014 Teaching & Learning Conference will feature concurrent sessions led by DePaul faculty and instructional staff. A copy of the program will be made available on this website soon.
The conference is jointly sponsored by Faculty Instructional Technology Services (FITS), the Office for Teaching, Learning and Assessment (TLA), the Committee on Learning and Teaching (COLT), and the Quality of Instruction Council (QIC).
The keynote speaker for the 2014 conference is Dr. José Bowen. Bowen will become the eleventh president of Goucher College in Baltimore on July 1. Previously, he has taught at Stanford and Georgetown Universities, and was dean of the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. He has published over 100 scholarly articles and has appeared as a musician with Stan Getz, Bobby McFerrin, and others. He has written a symphony, music for Hubert Laws and Jerry Garcia, and is the author of Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology out of your College Classroom will Improve Student Learning. In addition to the keynote address, Bowen will offer an afternoon workshop that offers faculty specific strategies and ideas for making the most out of face-to-face class time.
