Introduction to Item Analysis: Evaluating and Improving Multiple Choice Questions (Lincoln Park)

Friday, September 29 at 12:00pm to 2:00pm

John T. Richardson Library Room 300 2350 N Kenmore Ave, Chicago, IL

This workshop aims to provide teachers with the skills to evaluate the quality of their multiple choice questions. With this knowledge, teachers can precisely quantify just how easy or how hard the test truly is, how well the items are separating the higher scorers from the lower scorers, and how well the items are able to reproduce the students' scores. The workshop will focus on classical item analysis techniques such as item difficulty, item discrimination, and reliability indices. The session will be conducted in a hands-on format so that teachers will be able to conduct the analyses on their own. Example data sets will be provided in the session.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
(1) interpret item analysis reports to effectively improve the quality of the question items
(2) identify students’ strengths and weaknesses from the assessment report and alter their instructional strategies accordingly
(3) Apply strategies to improve writing high quality items
