Learning Lab: Embodied Learning and Movement

In Learning Labs at DePaul and Harvard participants are wondering what the role of body is in how we construct knowledge. We propose a Learning Lab focusing on this question, What can the body know and why does it matter? This workshop invites participants to explore paralinguistics, emotions, and gestures as pathways to understanding. We will reflect together on our experiences and consider implications for learning from our respective contexts.

Drawing from philosophy, and research in anthropology & organizational theory, we seek to embody the concepts of body literacy (paralinguistics, emotions, and gestures) and invite participants to make connections and raise their own questions.

We aim to better understand the links of body literacy to personal experience as well as the associations and questions participants have when exploring these concepts. We intend to use this data to improve the efficacy of our kinesthetic pedagogy as we continue developing a method of ongoing practice to promote meaningful and intentional connection both to oneself and others.

Our workshop will include exercises that range from individual, partnered, and whole group interaction. This workshop is intended for adults from a broad range of backgrounds. Participants should be open and willing to do physical movement, though no dance or somatic background necessary. An ideal set-up would include a large open room with chairs around the periphery.
