Several times a year CAEA hosts Learning Labs for adult learning professionals to experiment with new approaches to learner engagement and success. Participants, who are learning professionals themselves, are invited to join in as learners to support the experiment and to offer constructive feedback to help the facilitator refine her approach.

Let’s Meet the GAILs, is a Learning Lab by Dr. Deborah W. Holton, designed to promote academic, as well as professional, and personal self-awareness, self-improvement, and self-empowerment. Through the lens of Energy LeadershipTM, we’ll meet the GAILs, an acronym for Gremlins (inner critics),Assumptions, Interpretations, and Limiting Beliefs. The GAILs are obstacles to our creativity, productivity, sense of well-being, and our potential for recognizing and developing opportunities for ourselves and others.
As adult learners, acknowledging our GAILs and how they influence us can elevate our confidence, nurture our self-esteem, and open us to more options going forward. The lab’s intention is to introduce learners to their GAILs and to tools to support their success. Group and individual activities, self-reflection, sharing, and discussion will contribute to our collective experience.
Associate Professor Deborah W. Holton, Ph.D., MFA, has educated and mentored adult learners at DePaul’s School for New Learning for over twenty-eight years. Having served as an associate dean for administration from 2003-2004, Dr. Holton is the past associate dean for mentoring and part-time faculty at the college (2010-2013). Dr. Holton is a Certified Professional Coach and Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner through the Institute for Professional Coaching (iPEC).
