Title: Student Success and Mathematics Pathways: Rethinking mathematics remediation and the first year curriculum
Abstract: For many decades the mathematics preparation of college students has been front and center in national conversations around student success. Recent data analysis has revealed the importance of differentiated mathematics pathways and the systemic barriers to completion inherent to traditional models of remediation. As institutions have launched redesign efforts to address these concerns they have been faced with new challenges that are remarkably similar across different types of institutions. We will discuss ongoing redesign efforts, highlighting some of these new challenges, providing examples from recent work done by faculty at Wright State University and other institutions.
