The 1960’s in American history was a tumultuous period that left a significant mark on the social, cultural and political landscape of country. This exhibit seeks to zoom-in on the life of African-Americans during that period through the lens of the popular EBONY and JET magazines which found their way in many African-American households. From the covers, we glean the “trending” and urgent social issues of the time.

The magazine covers present a “time machine” that takes us back to the 1960’s to discover and learn about the pressing social topics that African-Americans felt were important at the time. The covers reveal social codes, middle-class Black respectability, and changing values and ideologies as the decade progressed.

Exhibit runs : October 10, 2018 to March 10, 2019.

Brought to you by: Center for Black Diaspora and the Black Cultural Center at DePaul.

Refreshments will be served.
