About this Event
800 W Belden Ave
Join the DePaul African Ensemble and special guests Son Monarcas for an evening of music highlighting shared musical roots between West African drumming and Afro-Mexican music from Veracruz.
Son Monarcas are a Chicago-based ensemble dedicated to performing son jarocho. Their name evokes the monarch butterfly that migrates from the Midwest to Mexico and is equally at home in both worlds. The group is strongly rooted in tradition, but the musicians draw on their experience performing jazz and Afro-Caribbean music in the group’s original songs. The ensemble has performed throughout the Chicago area, and they give frequent educational workshops for children and adults. To learn more about the group, please visit sonmonarcas.com.
