The Career Services Workshop Series presents Yoga for Musicians, a virtual presentation and group discussion with Kiyoe Matsuura (MM ‘16), violinist and certified yoga instructor.

This event is open to current School of Music students and alumni.

During this Yoga for Musicians Workshop, Kiyoe will teach practical movements to stretch and strengthen common tension areas of the body. Keeping the specific needs of musicians in mind, we will start with breathwork, then focus on exercises for the wrists, neck, shoulders, and spine. With remaining time, we will explore exercises for the core, hips, and lower body. These exercises are designed to be gentle yet effective, with modifications offered for safety and accessibility. The goal of this workshop is to offer yoga tools to accompany the typical musician’s routine of practice, rehearsals, and concerts, in order to reduce bodily pain, tension, and stress. Be prepared to move your body, wear comfortable clothes and have an open floor space to move. There will be time at the end for group discussion.

Kiyoe Matsuura (MM ‘16) is a violinist and a certified yoga instructor. While studying at DePaul, Kiyoe was drawn to yoga as a way to alleviate stress as well shoulder pain caused by her violin studies. In 2017 she completed her 200-hour Power Yoga teacher certification and in 2019 she earned her Yoga Sculpt teacher certification. Kiyoe now balances work as a professional violinist with yoga instruction, teaching yoga formats including Power, Sculpt, Vinyasa, Hatha, and Yin in various studios and clubs around Chicago. Her teaching style emphasizes functional anatomy and alignment while incorporating the relationship between the body, mind, and breath.
