Named in honor of Donald Casey, the School of Music’s most recent former Dean, the Casey Lecture is an annual opportunity for a great thinker in the arts to offer a moving and insightful address on a topic relevant to today’s musicians and music professionals. On this final day of Unveiled, the Casey Lecture will feature John von Rhein, the former classical music critic of The Chicago Tribune, a role he held from 1977 until 2018. During that time, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra had three music directors and Lyric Opera of Chicago four general directors. Von Rhein covered innumerable other shifts (seismic and otherwise) on the local cultural scene, as well. Before joining The Tribune, he reviewed classical music and dance for the Akron Beacon Journal. Mr. Von Rhein will discuss the state of arts criticism before taking questions from the audience.
