The Coleman Entrepreneurship Center Hackathon Challenge tests students to create solutions to a real problem. This years challenge features improving DePaul’s sustainability efforts throughout the university. The purpose of the Hackathon is to encourage students from all colleges to think entrepreneurially and creatively. The focus this year will be on sustainability. Students will apply online to pitch their idea for a sustainability initiative that could be implemented on DePaul’s campus! From there, we will put applicants into groups to work alongside a mentor on the top 3 ideas selected by conference organizers. The finalist will develop their idea into an actual pitch presentations. All DePaul undergraduate and graduate students from all colleges are eligible to apply to compete for a share of more than $7,000 in scholarships. Applications close March 30th.

Student applicants should consider what is missing from DePaul’s campus that, if implemented, would improve our ecological footprint. In thinking of a pitch, students should consider the definition of sustainability in DePaul’s 2011 Institutional Sustainability Plan:

“Sustainability recognizes the interdependence of environmental, human, and economic systems so that people around the globe may enjoy a healthy and fulfilling quality of life now and into the future. It views sustainability as a way of thinking and acting that respects the Earth’s ecological limits.”
