We are witnessing an extraordinary time of high school student civic engagement and activism.  From the March for Our Lives and high school walkouts this month, to interest in electoral activity to organizing around immigration issues to involvement in school equity issues, high school students are speaking out on issues that matter to them.

A panel of high school students will discuss their work on:

• Gun control and gun violence in schools and the community
• Supporting immigrant students and organizing for fair immigration laws
• Advocating for equity:  Chicago school closings; budget cuts and resources for neighborhood schools
• Becoming involved in electoral activity: voting, campaigning, engaging the issues of the day

Panelists will include students who were leaders in their high school walkouts on gun violence and the March for Our Lives protest; students who are fighting to keep Englewood schools open; others who brought students to the polls for early voting and served as election judges.

Heather Van Benthuysen from the CPS Office of Civic Engagement and former high school teacher will offer ideas about how to encourage and support civic engagement. The panel will be followed by small group discussions.
