In 1700, a group of English nobles offered a prize for the best setting of William Congreve’s operatic libretto, The Judgment of Paris. Four British Baroque composers entered the competition and each had their version staged the next year. More than three centuries later, DePaul Opera Theatre will present the work of Daniel Purcell, one of those four competition entrants. His recently rediscovered setting beautifully tells the story of the god Mercury who asks the shepherd Paris to award the Golden Apple of Discord to whichever goddess – Juno, Pallas or Venus – he finds most worthy.
