Illuminating Identity, Power, and Racial Equity in Diverse Learning Environments

Join us for the 2019 Bertram Scott-Elizabeth A Fender Distinguished Leader Workshop

Illuminating Identity, Power, and Racial Equity in Diverse Learning Environments

with Desiree Adaway

5:30PM Refreshments

6:00PM Program

As learning and development professionals we all possess a unique constellation of identities, as do our learners. We’ve also been socialized into a society that has certain rules, expectations, norms, and prejudices regarding our identities.

In this interactive session, we’ll take a deep dive into what makes up our and our learners' dominant identities and culture. We will also explore how power operates personally and systemically across the cycle of socialization and why that is critical when fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of our learning environments. Using a race equity framework we’ll explore examples of how we reinforce oppressive practices and power dynamics (both implicitly and explicitly) and ways we can break through and transform as learning and development professionals, communities and organizations.
