Save the date for next Friday~ In recognition of Indigenous People’s Day, OMSS, OIDE and OSI are coming together to bring you DePaul’s Second Annual Indigenous People’s Day Celebration!. . . . Our Indigenous People’s Day Celebration was one of OMSS’s popular events last academic year, and we are so thrilled to be bringing this program back on a larger scale. We hope to come together to honor our global indigenous peoples, to critically examine our own relationships to indigenous communities, and to learn more about global histories and relationships with indigeneity.. . . . We are incredibly honored to have cultural presentations by Danza Azteca Xochitl-Quetzal, Ayodele Drum & Dance, and Halau i Ka Pono.. . . . ***Danza Azteca Xochitl-Quetzal (xo-chee ket-zal) is based in the Back of the Yards and Little Village neighborhoods of Chicago. Their name means "Precious Flower" in Nahuatl, the Aztec language. Their group of children and adults dances and sings the indigenous music of the Aztec and Mexica people of Mexico, music that has been passed down over centuries.. . . . ***Ayodele Drum & Dance exists to foster community from a feminine perspective through the study and performance of diasporic African drum and dance. Whether they’re teaching children, healing the community with classes, producing sold out concerts, studying with female Samba Masters in Brazil, Master Djembe and Dununfolas of West Africa or spreading their healing energy through performances; Ayodele Drum & Dance remains an unending circle firmly rooted in joy.. . . . ***Halau i Ka Pono is a Hawaiian Hula School in Chicago based in Oak Park, IL. Kumu Hula June Kaililani Tanoue established the school in 2009. Halau i Ka Pono means “place that cultivates the goodness.” They are dedicated to growing aloha by sharing Hawaiian culture and stories through the joy of Hula.. . . . . . Additionally, we are incredibly excited to share that we will be unveiling plaques with DePaul’s official land acknowledgment that can be displayed across campus. If your office or department would like a plaque to display in a community space, please scan our QR code to reserve one. This form can only be accessed with a DePaul email address—personal Gmail accounts are unable to access the form. You may also email LARANDA@depaul.edu to reserve. The plaques may be picked up at our celebration or by appointment.. . . . Friday, October 7th. . 5:30-8:30 PM. . Lincoln Park Student Center Room 120AB. . 2250 N Sheffield Ave. . . .
