2018 marked the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in line with this topic we have organized a lecture inviting two scholars who are working on issues of police brutality and institutional violence in Latin America as part of “Celebración de Nuestra América Series”. They are María Pita (she is an anthropologist from Argentina) and Jesús Cossio (he is an illustrator and author of comic books and graphic novels from Perú). They are working on a project that combines both methodologies, they call it “investigación con lenguaje narrativo de historieta documental.” In a few words, they are both present at an interview with someone who has experienced police brutality (or the victim’s relatives) and while one collects information with notes and the usual ways anthropologists use, the other one illustrates graphic stories capturing the person and also the emotions related to the content of the interview.
