Ran Zwigenberg explores this question in Nuclear Minds: Cold War Psychological Science and the Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Tracking the emergence of a trans-Pacific research network that arose from the study of the 1945 bombings, Nuclear Minds shines a light on the influence of U.S. cultural hegemony and Cold War science on the academic interpretation of the study data. Zwigenberg argues that the category of trauma should not be used uncritically in a non-Western context, in this way highlighting the importance of the intersections of science, history, and cultural studies.
