As U.S. Ambassador and Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues, J.D. Bindenagel played a central role in creating the international protocols on the restitution of Nazi-looted art, known as the Washington Principles on Nazi-Confiscated Art, which were established in December of 1998.

Over 75 years after the end of the Second World War, the work of restitution continues. So too does the phenomenon of concerted efforts to destroy the memory and identity of both peoples and nations, as we are currently witnessing in the form of deliberate Russian attacks on Ukrainian cultural sites.

Join Dr. Gene Beiriger of DePaul’s Department of History in a conversation with Ambassador Bindenagel to help us gain insight into this dimension of war and the diplomatic efforts to address this most challenging issue.
