Part of the Technology & Data Protection Initiative, CIPLIT’s Tech Law Boot Camp series features lectures by professors, practicing attorneys and other tech specialists on relevant substantive technology topics, including certifications, technology management principles, data privacy, cybersecurity, networking concepts and Internet law. These lectures are open to DePaul law students, alumni and the Chicago legal community.

All 2023 Tech Law Boot Camp sessions will be hybrid (live and virtual) from 12:00-1:00 pm and take place in Lewis 805 (25 East Jackson Boulevard).

The third session will be “Why is Ransomware Still A Thing?” on November 9, 2023, hosted by Karen Heart of DePaul CDM.

1 hour IL CLE will be provided for all requesting attendees. Lunch will be provided for in person attendees.

Bios:

Anthony Volini (Professor of Legal Practice, DePaul Law): Prior to joining DePaul, Anthony G. Volini was an associate at a Chicago intellectual property firm, where he primarily handled patent prosecution and infringement analyses in a variety of technology areas, including extrusion and other mechanical devices, plastics, household products, surgical navigation equipment and insecticides. Volini is a member of DePaul’s Center for Intellectual Property Law & Information Technology (CIPLIT®) and routinely advises students on interviewing, networking and resume writing. He also assists with coordinating CIPLIT® job placements. He is an inventor on U.S. Patent 7,308,992, assigned to S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc., concerning aerosol actuating technology. In addition to teaching his specific courses, he contributes to guiding the law school’s overall technology and intellectual property curriculum, including his active collaboration with DePaul’s College of Computing & Digital Media (CDM) on interdisciplinary technology education for law students.

Colin Black (Associate, Polsinelli): Colin Black advises clients on best practices to prepare for and prevent cybersecurity incidents of all types, including ransomware, complex malware and insider threat events, through risk management counseling, drafting policies and procedures and facilitation of training exercises. He assists clients on all aspects of data incidents, including coordination of remediation, forensic analysis, deploying crisis communications to stakeholders, and providing notice to affected individuals and to regulators as necessary. Colin’s practice includes advising on a variety of complex privacy frameworks, including those created under HIPAA/HITECH, FERPA, GLBA, BSA, GDPR and state privacy laws.

Karen Heart (Instructor, DePaul Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media): Karen is a teacher, software developer, and attorney with many years of experience in both fields. Currently, she teaches computer science at DePaul University and has done so for several years. From standalone end user applications to middleware to architecting distributed systems, Karen has created a wide range of software products and tools for a variety of industries, including among others publishing, banking, insurance, and logistics. As an attorney, Karen has concentrated her work in intellectual property, civil and criminal litigation, including some appellate work. She holds an MS in Computer Science from DePaul University, a JD from the University of Texas, and has completed the PhD coursework in Computer Science at UIC. Karen is licensed to practice law in Illinois. Her current research interests include system security, forensics, and cybersecurity regulation and liability.
