Vietnamese-American Catholics…or American-Vietnamese Catholics?

Vietnamese-born scholar Peter Phan tells the story of Vietnamese Catholics’ immigration to the U.S. after the fall of South Vietnam in 1975. He paints a picture of Vietnamese American Catholics in the U.S. today, offering a deeper understanding of this community’s faith and culture by taking a brief journey back through the past 400 years of the Catholic Church in Vietnam. And he describes how the Church there is currently carrying out its threefold mission of liberation, inculturation, and interreligious dialogue under the country's socialist-communist regime. To conclude, he highlights some of the most urgent pastoral and spiritual needs and challenges of Vietnamese American Catholics and suggests ways to meet them.
