Dr. Antonio Byrd will discuss how large language models like ChatGPT prioritize pleasing the user by generating outputs in Standard American English. This teaches students a flattened, generic version of English and suggests their own varieties of English are offensive to others. In an interactive presentation, Dr. Byrd will discuss classroom activities to reveal how these linquistic pleasure tools are trained to hide histories of oppression and dehumanization. By having students investigate the texts LLM designers try to filter out of their generative Al tools, instructors and students can embrace the varieties of English they use to write while downgrading LLMs from pleasure tools to productivity assistants.
