The Writing, Rhetoric, & Discourse Department in LAS welcomes Dr. Ana Ribero to the Lincoln Park Campus on Tuesday, April 28, at 4:20pm in McGowan South 108.  Dr. Ribero is Director of the MA in English in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film at Oregon State University.  Her talk is entitled, “Cruelty in the Name of Sovereignty: Im/migrant Detention in the Era of Enmity." 

Description:
This talk explores how im/migrant detention functions not only as a procedural step to deportation and a deterrence mechanism, but also, through the purposeful use of cruelty, as an enduring echo of state power that reminds the previously detained and their communities of the supposed immutability of US sovereignty.
